Obaru is a our new Dobari Shinai with an oval grip (Koban Gata) on the left hand. Oval grip Shinais allow the Kenshis a firmer grip making the side strikes, such as Do or Yoko Men more precise.

OBARU oval handle November 10, 2007

I got the oval hande to improve my awareness of the  cutting edge of the shinai while wearing kote.

Because of the oval grip, I am absolutely certain when I draw or return to guard that the cutting edge is properly aligned.
 A bonus feature of the oval grip (the left hand portion of the grip is oval) is that the leather will not spin; which means the tsuru stays aligned.
