I am just a kenjitsu/tameshigiri guy,use shinai for randori, grind up shinai too fast by comparison with the other reviewers,6months is a long life unbroken. The obaru is the best! no looking down, while 'busy', to spin my shinai around to point the right way! the confidence with release/re-grip indexing is critical in my personal growth, performance

5 of 5 AWESOME February 21, 2010

Like everyone else says, this shinai is a world of difference away from the standard shinais you'll find most places. I'm from an Aikido (like the guy below) and Iaido background, and this shinai felt instantly better in my hands. I feel my strikes are better, and the dobari weighting has my recoveries quicker as well. Am ordering a second right now.

5 of 5 Brilliant Obaru Oval handle Shinai August 15, 2009
Reviewer: Jorg Knoest from Bergen, Hordaland Norway
To me this Oval handled shinai is a world of difference from a regular- shaped handle shinai.
As a former aikidoka where we used to train with the Bokken, this shinai feels more familiar to me. I truly enjoy training with it. And to other former aikidokas who have found Kendo, I really recommend it.

5 of 5 OBARU July 29, 2009
Reviewer: O'Connell Terry from Williamsport, PA United States
I have been using ebogu’s “Obaru” for a couple of years now and have found it to be one of the finest shinai I have ever owned. It is very easy to maintain a proper grip during keiko. It is also reasonably priced for the quality. I strongly recommend the Obaru for any level kendoka.

5 of 5 My Favorite Shinai June 29, 2008
Reviewer: Joseph A. Clark from Sidney, OH United States
My Obaru has lasted for over 2 years with weekly practices, plus tournaments.  I find the grip more comfortable than the round grip, and as stated, I know when my shinai is properly presented to my opponent.  I do have a slight problem with the tsuru, in that it does wear quickly where my left hand grips, and it does get slick with time.  I've ordered a replacement for my current Obaru.

4 of 5 Obvious design evolution June 11, 2008
Reviewer: J. Jason Levesque from Silver Spring, MD United States
I now have two of these oval handle shinai from and have a great preference for them.  As far as reliance on technology vs. skill, I see no such conflict.  After all, a sword grip is oval as well.  Price is comparable to any other shinai I have purchased.

My only complaint is that the quality of the bamboo and leathers are not up to my madake versions.  I hope E-bogu expands on their selection of oval grips and starts including higher quality options.

5 of 5 OBARU oval handle November 10, 2007
Reviewer: Philip from Reston, VA United States
I got the oval hande to improve my awareness of the  cutting edge of the shinai while wearing kote.

Because of the oval grip, I am absolutely certain when I draw or return to guard that the cutting edge is properly aligned.
A bonus feature of the oval grip (the left hand portion of the grip is oval) is that the leather will not spin; which means the tsuru stays aligned.
