"This is our newest extra thick Shinai. BIZEN TOKUSEN. We designed this Shinai based on our existing BIZEN and the Shinai that I got from Takahashi Sensei from Kyoto, Japan. Takahashi Sensei and I fought at the 11th World Kendo Championships in Santa Clara, CA. I am sure people with larger hands would be very happy with this Shinai. The most challenging thing about the design of this Shinai was to keep the good balance of the Shinai, although the amount of Bamboo is larger compared to our other Shinais. We tried placing the balance towards the handle side, which makes the Shinai feel light, just like Takahashi Sensei's Shinai."  Taro Ariga CEO (Kendo Kyoshi 7 Dan)

SIZE WEIGHT STYLE A B C D E
TIP THICKEST RIGHT GRIP LEFT GRIP CENTER OF GRAVITY
39 465-500 Dobari 2.2cm 4.3cm 3.3cm 3cm 65 cm

Our TOKUSEN Series Shinais are made from a batch of selected Top Quality MADAKE Bamboos. We carefully hand pick the selected bamboos, and each bamboo goes through a rigorous inspection process.

These bamboos are then cut into correct sizes, dried and stored waiting to be transformed into Shinais.

Shinai Making process:

Heat and pressure are applied to the bamboo pieces, in order to make it softer and to be adjusted to be straight.

Each Bamboos is hand placed on a machine to fix the shape.

The Bamboo is placed on the cutter, in order to make the shape of the Shinai.

Then the Bamboo piece is placed on a sanding machine to produce the 45 degrees angle.

Another sanding machine is used to give the touch to the corners of the bamboo pieces.

Then the 4 pieces of Bamboo are placed together and inserted into another sanding machine for the final touch.

Final detailed waxing of the Shinai to give a nice luster to the shinai.

5 of 5 Great for large hands December 13, 2020
Reviewer: Yumeko Kirisaki from Florida, US
I just started doing kendo for 3 months and after every week, I'd have open blisters because I couldn't get a tight enough grip on the shinai and it was moving too much in my hands when swinging. I talked to sensei about shinai with larger grip and he said it might be good for me with my larger hands. I got this shinai along with everything to put on it and it has helped so much with the blisters and grip. It's much easier for me to hold onto the shinai without my fingers digging into my palm with the regular sized grip.

5 of 5 Bizen Shinai review February 23, 2020
Reviewer: simon sader from edison, NJ United States
Despite its thick grip the Bizen is as light as a feather.
If you're looking for a keiko shinai that can act as fast as your instinct look no further. Do not use the Bizen to hit a kendo dummy. To build kendo muscles use a heavier shinai.

5 of 5 Really thick grip, good quality August 12, 2013
Reviewer: David from CA United States
I wanted to try a shinai with a really thick grip and that is exactly what I got, so I am satisfied. This is also my first try ordering madake bamboo and it is nice. I am noticing smaller and fewer splinters and the finish on my shinai looks good. When I hold this shinai, I feel like the tip is very light and agile. After practicing with this shinai, even my old ones with narrower tsuka feel better, so maybe that means I learned something by trying a new shinai. Did it help me grip better with my wrists on top? I am not experienced enough to understand exactly what happened to me, but I like it!

P.S. I put some talc powder in the tsuka before putting it on and this makes it easy to take off and put on, but it doesn't slip during practice.

Update: I cracked it and am buying another.

5 of 5 Perfect Balance September 12, 2011
Reviewer: Peter Yu from Seattle, WA
I have big hands for an Asian, and it was hard to find great balance Shinai with a thick handle. This Shinai is perfect for me. I purchased 2 and I have been using both, but after 3 months, both of them are still in very good condition.

I would suggest you have the Tsuka placed when you purchase, because is is pretty hard to get the Tsuka in, due to the thick handle. I heard e-bogu has a machine, so it is probably easy to just ask them to put the Tsuka for you.

4 of 5 Update August 19, 2011
Reviewer: Konno from Boston
So I had some time to use the Tokusen Madake Bizen in keiko. Though I stated that the finish wasn't as good as it could be, the durability of the shinai I am impressed with. After preparing prior to use (shaving corners and oiling), I have not seen any splinting after a month of use. I also like the balance of the shinai as well. So I have updated my review to 4 stars.
