I'm that friend... :) These are the best off-the-shelf tonfa that I've ever found. Excellent weight, finish, proportions and engineering. I'm here buying more. If you wanted anything better, you'd have to make them yourself.
EDIT: I'd like to respectfully disagree with Ben regarding the sizing of the headpiece. I have always found that when it's too large it will give unnecessary blisters on your thumb from excess friction. You don't need this huge ball on the end of the "handle" to maintain your grip. These are properly proportioned so that you can get a tactile sense that your hand is in the right place without the knob becoming a crutch for sloppy technique. I've never dropped/thrown mine. Osu!
