This is a very tough shinai for the price. I have put it against a few of the higher price ones, and your not going to notice much difference if you are just beginning. As a point, if one piece of wood goes inside, you disassemble the shinai and pull it back, that likely indicates you are hitting something way too hard for a shinai, it is bamboo, noi steel
