I bought this jo for my koryu class to use (I'm a student) and in the last 3 weeks of use it has held up well enough. Although the jo I got is a bit on the light side for a jo with the typical proportions, weighing 490 grams, it's held up against hard strikes with a shirakashi (Japanese white oak) bokken. While there is more denting on the jo than the bokken, the wood does not feel brittle on solid impact, but rather flexible for a hardwood and insulates your hand from shock the way you'd expect a good oak weapon to. I suspect if I had requested a heavier/denser piece it would dent less, and the dents this one has received is not producing splinters, so I can't complain much.
