OBARU is the Oval Grip (Koban Gata Shinai) Madake Shinai from E-BOGU.COM. It has a similar balance as our Dobashi Shinais, but the Tsuka (handle) area is shaved down to an oval shape.

"The Oval Handle makes the Kenshis hold the Shinai properly, using the correct Hasuji. Specially for strikes to the Do and Yoko Men, it improves your Kendo. I use it not only for basics practice, but also for Shiais and Keiko, I find it very effective to use our OBARU Shinais." Taro Ariga (Kendo Kyoshi 7 Dan)

5 of 5 Very nice grip Sunday, January 18, 2026
Reviewer: Alexander C. from Everett, WA United States
As I do another sword art (Seibu Ryu), the round grip Shinai I was using before felt a little weird.  Adding the oval grip to my kit has a very nice and comfortable feel and I don’t feel as disconnected.  Will definitely be using this grip type moving forward.

Looks awesome and very well made. Very robust and fits in the hand nicely. The construction looks and feels perfect. Can't wait to try these in the dojo. Need more stars for the craftsmanship of these shinai. I will order again!
